AGMOW - An international research project for understanding order transformation and anticipating multi-order governance

About the project

Transformation of the international system is a rare but significant occurrence that is often accompanied by a heightened risk of political turbulence and war. The international system is currently in such a process of transformation as it is transforming into a system consisting of several international orders - a Multi-Order World. The arrival of the Multi-Order World will fundamentally alter the conditions for global order and governance.

The new system is different from previous international systems because it rests on a new global structure of relations. A return to past forms of governance and order-making is therefore not an option. A fundamental question is how new forms of cooperative global governance can be ensured.

AGMOW utilizes foresight methods to understand the drivers of change and processes of transformation and to anticipate how they might affect the prospects for global cooperative governance on some of the many challenges that will face the global international society in the coming years

About the team

The AGMOW project benefits from an international team of six members who each bring essential and complementary qualifications and expertise to the project and who are each embedded in extensive research networks. Members of the AGMOW team are all renowned experts in their fields and share a commitment to the common research objectives, theoretical foundations and methodological approach of the AGMOW project. In addition AGMOW benefits from input and sparring with a highly qualified Advisory Board, whose members add additional expertise to the project.

About the funding

AGMOW is generously funded by Independent Research Fund Denmark for Social Sciences. Our funding covers the period 2023 – 2026 to look at a selection of governance and ordering domains. We are interested in partnering with, and participating in, other similar projects and to build a network of researchers interested in order transformation and new forms of transnational and multi-order governance.
